Lima van conversions - to insulated, plywood and LNER types

By John Allison

This is an excerpt from a longer article in issue 7 of Model Trains International.

Insulated van of BR standard type is not vented and has the vent area covered with rectangles of corrugated plastic card (to match the corrugated ends). Repainting white and lettering are the main requirements. On this model a thin paper overlay has been added to the roof to give the characteristic 'worn roof' appearance.

The smooth-sided plywood walled van is another easy variation done by cutting out and pasting thin paper overlays over the sides - each segment between the bracing must be cut and glued separately. In this case the doors are left in planked form, but some vans also had smooth doors.

By cutting and sanding off all the moulded strapping you can put on paper overlays with vertical planking scored in, to give a LNER standard van, here painted in BR style as a (brake-)fitted vehicle.
